Ford makes STEAM Lab Curriculum available for classroom use

Opportunities are plentiful for those with science, technology, engineering and mathematics aptitude. In the U.S. manufacturing sector alone, nearly 500,000 positions are available for individuals with these skills. While a surplus of jobs may seem promising now, it may be problematic in years to come if the country lacks a skilled workforce. The U.S. faces a potential STEM labor shortage of 1 million by 2022.

But hope is not lost. In fact, at Ford, we have developed what we believe is a scalable solution to this challenge.

In 2014, Ford Motor Company Fund introduced the Ford STEAM Lab–a digital-blended learning curriculum, which takes students through a hackathon style process of exposing them to careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and tech entrepreneurship. The program adds an arts component to help students use creativity and innovation in problem solving and collaboration.

 

 

Ford is deeply committed to innovation in education. That’s why we are proud to now offer the Ford STEAM Lab curriculum at no charge to teachers across the country for use in their classrooms.

We first announced this initiative during the 28th annual National Dropout Prevention Network Conference in Detroit. There, we hosted #TeacherHack: Using Technology to Disrupt Dropout Rates–a two-day innovation experience for educators modeled after the student STEAM Lab.

This is one of the many ways the Ford Motor Company Fund is building and supporting communities.

Engaging and interactive learning environments are at the core of student success. We know that students who excel academically are poised to excel in their careers and make powerful contributions to society.
